Chapter Three
By Crystal
Nick awoke but kept his eyes closed, keeping his attention on the
sound of the light rain that tapped against his window. After a
few minutes of peaceful quietness, he turned in his bed and
stretched his arms and legs out away from the rest of his body.
He tossed the sheets off of him and got up, heading straight to
the bathroom. After a quick shower he threw on a white wife
beater and a pair of khaki pants.
As he hummed the tune to a new song he had heard on the radio the
night before, he ate a banana a bagel and a glass of orange
juice. The phone rang, catching his attention.
"Hello? Yeah. Okay. Sure, no problem. I'm heading over there
now. Okay, thanks. Bye." He hung up the phone and went to
collect his wallet, keys and a hat. He climbed in his Durango and
was on his way to town for business.
"And now for your local weather. Rain is expected to
continue well into the end of the week with possible
thunderstorms later this afternoon. Please use caution when
driving and if you can avoid it, don't do any out-of-town driving
for the time being."
Nick changed the radio station. Who wants to hear about weather?
He scanned the road out in front of him. There was hardly anyone
on the highway.
What happened next seemed to go in slow motion
A truck
carrying a load of rocks on the other side of the highway slid
out of control and tipped over. The rocks spilled out onto the
highway. The car in front of him hit one and lost control,
spinning around. Before Nick knew exactly what was going on, he
felt as if someone shoved him and only the sound of shrieking
metal could be heard before everything went black.
